Fleet Appliance Repair Specialist in Babylon Explains the Anatomy of a Service Call

What factors determine the cost of appliance repair and why is it such a dreadful experience?

Babylon, NY – Appliance repair can be a dreadful experience that most people will avoid whenever possible. It seems like some kind of conspiracy when home appliances break down shortly after their warranty expires. Since appliances only break down during use, this means the job is left half-done, which can create more frustration. Bob Dougherty, owner of Fleet Appliance Repair Babylon understands the frustration and anxiety caused by broken down appliances.

Things are already behind schedule and now the owner must stop everything to call an appliance repair service and schedule an appointment. If he is successful, he will be given a window of several hours and the appliance repair man will show up on time.

When the appliance repairman arrives and fixes it in only 10 minutes, the customer will breathe a sigh of relief…until they see the bill for $150.00! Why so much money for so little time invested?

Things could be worse if the job requires replacement parts. Even if the new part is inexpensive, after adding the mark-up plus labor for installation, the total repair cost adds up quickly.

To add to the frustration the appliance repair man checks his truck to discover that he doesn’t have the necessary part with him. The appliance has been dismantled with parts scattered around, and it could take a week or two for them to special order this part that is not available locally.

Why is appliance repair service so much? Why is it that they never have the necessary parts? There has to be a better way!

Bob Dougherty, owner of Fleet Appliance Repair (http://www.fleetappliance.com), is an authorized service provider for many companies including Viking, Whirlpool, Maytag, Jen-Air, Tapan and White Westinghouse just to name a few. Several times a year, he will be required to travel out of town to attend training seminars on new products and service information. Bob Dougherty is responsible for paying all his travel related expenses.

In addition, appliance repair technicians pay for liability insurance, vehicle maintenance, tools and equipment, office supplies and other business related expenses.

The reason parts seem to be more expensive today is because appliances have many more electronic parts and circuit boards than in the past. These parts are more expensive than mechanical parts from “back in the day.”

The appliance repair man cannot possibly stock every part and they can rarely diagnose the problem and purchase the part based on the customer’s description. If they do take a chance and order the part, they may not be able to send it back if it is wrong. Or, they might have to pay a restocking fee.

Bob Dougherty understands the frustration consumers face when appliances break down. Fleet Appliance technicians take great pride in their work; they arrive on time, in uniform and in a lettered vehicle, fully stocked and prepared to complete most services on their first trip. The technician will thoroughly inspect the appliance and then recommend the best course of action. Visit http://www.appliancerepairbabylonnewyork.com/ to learn more.

Ice Maker Repair Man from Fleet Appliance Repair in Babylon Provides Troubleshooting Tips

Several simple things to check when the icemaker fails to produce cubes

Babylon NY – People take their home appliances for granted, so when they fail to operate it can cause frustration and anxiety. Mom is hosting a party and she goes to the freezer for ice and notices there is none! Calling the local ice maker repair man is not an option…she needs ice for her guests now.

According to Bob Dougherty, owner of Fleet Appliance Repair, the ice maker is a simple mechanism. When it fails, there are a few simple things the owner should check before calling the ice maker repair man. Chances are, a flip of a switch or minor adjustment will get the ice flowing in no time.

Here are the tips suggested by the ice maker repair specialist at Fleet Appliance Repair (http://www.fleetappliance.com):

• Make sure the wire signal arm and power switch are in the ON position

• Check for ice blocking the mechanism and make sure the water filter cartridge isn’t clogged

• Perhaps the saddle valve on the cold water line is clogged – if so, replace the valve.

• Refer to the service manual troubleshooting section

Another problem with ice makers is the wire signal arm being held down, causing the unit to produce too much ice. Make sure nothing is holding it down. It should rise as the ice accumulates and then stop producing ice when the container is full.

If none of these suggestions produce a solution then call Fleet Appliance Repair. They will send a local ice maker repair expert to diagnose and fix the problem. Fleet Appliance Repair technicians are certified, licensed and insured to provide quality service for most makes and models of home appliances.

Getting to the Bottom of Laundry Mountain with Tips from Fleet Appliance Repair Babylon NY

Has someone stolen the washer and dryer or is it really buried under the huge pile of dirty laundry?

Appliance Repair Babylon NY technician, Bob Dougherty, enjoys building positive relationships with his customers while servicing their appliances. Unlike many appliance service providers, Bob enjoys friendly conversation while he is working.

During a recent appliance service call, Dougherty felt the customer’s pain when he saw the huge mountain of laundry, so he got right to work diagnosing and repairing the washing machine.

In his spare time, Dougherty enjoys creating blogs and posting articles about appliance repair and troubleshooting, appliance recall notices and information about finding and choosing an appliance service company.

The customer’s large pile of laundry was the inspiration for one of Bob’s most recent posts entitled Knocking Down the Laundry Mountain. The piece contains tips for keeping ahead and preventing the mountain from growing in the first place.

The first and most critical tip is to avoid temptation to overload the washer and dryer. According to Dougherty, this will not save time by getting the job done faster. “Overloading the washer and dryer puts excess stress on the appliances, causing pre-mature breakdown and higher energy bills,” said Dougherty. “Clothes come out cleaner with less wrinkling when they have plenty of room to move freely during the wash cycle.”

Other suggestions from the Babylon appliance repair man include:

Arrange the laundry room so there is plenty of space for sorting, stain treating and folding to avoid cluttering up other rooms. Staying with it gets the job done more efficiently. This way, there is less chance of forgetting to add fabric softener to the rinse cycle, or removing items from the dryer that should not go through a complete dry cycle. With blankets and bedding, speed up drying time by tossing a couple of clean tennis balls into the dryer.

Moisture in the refrigerator compartment? Refrigerator leaking?

Moisture in the refrigerator compartment?

Why is there dew or sweat in the refrigerator compartment?
Some moisture in the refrigerator compartment and crispers is normal. Light sweat or humidity may build on interior walls, shelves, bottles, jars and other containers in the refrigerator compartment.

Moisture in Main Refrigerator Compartment

Excess moisture can be a result of the following:
Opening the doors frequently
Opening the doors frequently can cause sweat or dew to build in the refrigerator compartment. When the doors are opened, humid room air enters the refrigerator. The more often the doors are opened, the faster the humidity builds. Opening the doors less often will help, but may not completely eliminate internal moisture.
Humid environment
During months of high humidity (especially if a home is not air-conditioned), it is normal for some sweat or moisture to build inside the refrigerator when the room air is humid.
Blocked air vents
Make sure the air vents between the freezer and refrigerator compartments are not blocked. Objects blocking the vents will cause a decrease in proper air circulation, which can cause temperature and moisture problems. Move any items that could be blocking the vents.
Poor gasket seal
Moisture buildup around the door or on the ceiling suggests an air leak, likely due to a gasket problem. The door gasket should seal all the way around on the door. Make sure that nothing is keeping the gasket from making a good seal.

Moisture in Crisper Bins
Crispers are designed to hold moisture in order to keep vegetables fresh.
•             Washing foods before putting them in the crisper can cause excess moisture to form inside the crisper. To control moisture buildup, allow produce to dry on a towel after it is washed, before it is placed in the crisper. Excess moisture could cause produce to prematurely spoil.
•             On models with a moisture control on the front of the crisper, adjust the setting to low humidity or the fruit setting.  Refer to your Use and Care Guide for additional instructions and information about this feature.
